I'll be performing at Theatre of Yugen's monthly Worklights offering.
BALI UNMASKED presents a rare opportunity to learn the techniques of topeng, a unique and ancient theatre form. Come and explore topeng's fascinating combination of storytelling, mask work, dance and physical characterisation, as well as gain a deeper understanding of topeng's role in Balinese culture and society. The course is suitable for actors, dancers, storytellers, circus performers and students of performance.
A noh mask representing a demon from hell who dances a fierce dance. A smaller version of oobeshimi, the compressed scale of its features creates a truly frightening and intense aura. A sharp glare emanates from the protruding, metallic gold eyeballs. The mouth is clamped firmly together and the ends of the mouth curl downward without a hint of the playfulness seen in the oobeshimi. Kobeshimi's dark red color also lends the mask power. source ![]()
