BALI UNMASKED presents a rare opportunity to learn the techniques of topeng, a unique and ancient theatre form. Come and explore topeng's fascinating combination of storytelling, mask work, dance and physical characterisation, as well as gain a deeper understanding of topeng's role in Balinese culture and society. The course is suitable for actors, dancers, storytellers, circus performers and students of performance.
Workshops will be led by visiting Balinese experts (the renowned maskmaker and performer Ida Bagus Alit, along with his colleagues Ida Bagus Putu Parwita and Ida Bagus Putu Wirabumi) on their first European visit. Workshops will include contextual learning sessions by UK-based practitioners (dancer and choreographer Ni Madé Pujawati, Dr. Margaret Coldiron and Tiffany Strawson) in which the training will be built upon and we will explore ways of incorporating the knowledge and techniques into individual practice, as well as gain a deeper understanding of topeng's role in Balinese culture and society.
Hosted at Dartington College of Arts, near Totnes, Devon
