May 24 (Sat), 1pm – 2:30 Yerba Buena Gardens Festival – Balinese Gamelan 101 Free admission! The fifty performers of Gamelan Sekar Jaya, led by outstanding Balinese artists-in-residence I Dewa Ketut Adnyana, present the powerful rhythms and refined dances of Bali in this beautiful garden setting. Sekar Jaya will feature three types of gamelan: the orchestra of bronze metallophones and gongs called gamelan gong kebyar, the enchanting gender batel ensemble traditionally associated with shadow plays, and the ensemble of giant bamboo marimbas, gamelan jegog. The audience is welcomed to enjoy the complex interlocking melodies of these ensembles, and the myriad expressions and delicate hand and eye motions of Balinese dance, in this free outdoor setting.
